An image that is both unfamiliar and familiar at the same time: Bastian Schweinsteiger wore a Bayern shirt once again in a legendary match at the Allianz Arena. After the game in his “old living room” things got emotional…

In fact, former Bayern star Bastian Schweinsteiger (38) did not want to lace up his football boots himself, but then it became a very emotional return to the grass at the Allianz Arena. On Sunday, July 23, FC Bayern Munich celebrated the 10th anniversary of their treble success in 2013 and was invited to attend a legendary match between a selection of former Bayern players and a selection of former Dortmund players.

And of course many football legends followed the call, such as Bastian Schweinsteiger. But the former Bayern and Germany captain did not want to kick the ball at first. As he revealed to “Sport 1” in an interview after the match: “I actually didn’t want to play today.” But he saw his former coach Jupp Heynckes (78 years old) running onto the field and then asked himself: “When will there be an opportunity to play under Jupp Heynckes’ leadership again?” It was his greatest gift to have Heynckes, whom he described as having an “incredible humanity.”

In addition to Schweinsteiger, Claudio Pizarro, Luiz Gustavo, Mario Mandzukic, Dante, Daniel van Buyten, Rafinha, Jerome Boateng, Giovanni Elber and Ze Roberto were also on the pitch for the Munich team. For example, Kevin Grockreutz, Roman Weidenfeller, Marcel Schmelzer and Didi played for Dortmund. Philipp Lahm was also present, but without football boots in his luggage. However, the 2014 World Cup captain “only” sat in the stands alongside current Bayern captains Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller, who, like Lahm, were also part of the 2013 three-man squad.

Schweinsteiger then turned his attention to the Women’s World Cup, where Germany will take part in its first group match against Morocco on Monday morning. In a short clip, he wished the women of the German Football Association much success in Australia and New Zealand via Twitter: “I’m sure – because I know you a little – that you will rock the tournament.” It is believed that they will take the trophy back to their homeland.
