New Zealand does not mess with the parity requirements of the national sporting bodies. Rugby union, New Zealand Rugby, has been fined for not fulfilling the rule of 40% women on its board. It will see its annual public support, which Sport New Zealand pays to national associations, be reduced by NZ$280,000 (€170,000). As of 31 December 2021, New Zealand Rugby is the only one of the 65 national sporting bodies not to publish a quota of 40% women on their board of directors, a requirement set by the government. Only three of the nine New Zealand Rugby board members are currently women. Comment from Raelene Castle, CEO of Sport New Zealand: Although they have made real progress towards compliance, with three women out of nine on the board, New Zealand Rugby has indicated that the earliest date they could be in position with a target of 40 per cent female representation will likely be April 2023.The result: Rugby union could still be sanctioned next year with a new fine.
