Jane Campion settles accounts with Sam Elliott

New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion recently took a beating for her work on the Western film The Power of a Dog. When asked about Sam Elliott’s negative comments on the film, she said, “I’m sorry, I think he acted like BITCH.”

Elliott calls the movie “a piece of shit.”

Elliott, best known for “The Big Lebowski” but also for roles in several cowboy movies, complained about the film on the podcast “WTF with Marc Maron” calling it a “dirty piece.” The shirtless cowboy will remind him of Chippendales, and the movie will come with plenty of “homosexual allusions.”

The 77-year-old actor, while a fan of Campion’s previous work, said he disagreed with the production: “What does that woman know over there about American myths?” He also complained about the fact that the movie was shot in New Zealand.

Campion: “I don’t think so.”

While Elliott was critical of Campion and her western flick, the 67-year-old took home the first prize for her directorial achievement at the 2022 Directors Guild Awards.

When asked what she thought of Elliott’s remarks on the awards ceremony red carpet, Campion wrestled briefly before naming the five characters and then said, “I’m sorry, he’s not a cowboy, he’s an actor.”

She also sees Elliott’s comments as “sexist” and refer to other Western films that were also filmed outside the US and still “cool”. Finally, she said she positions herself: “I see myself as a creator. And I think he only sees me as a woman or less and I don’t believe in that.”

Campion Western has already won three awards at the 2022 Golden Globe Awards and has been nominated twelve times for the upcoming Academy Awards.
