Film Festival: Corsage @ NZIFF – Goethe-Institut New Zealand

The Goethe-Institut is pleased to present a German-language film at NZIFF again this year.

Corsage (Austria/Luxembourg/Germany/France, 2022, 113 min)
Director: Mary Kreutzer

Christmas 1877: The Austrian Empress Elisabeth, known as “Sisi,” celebrates her 40th birthday. She is popular with large sections of the population because she has managed to reconcile her image of a modest “Bavarian girl” with the grandeur of an empress. She is considered a fashion icon, an incredibly strong woman, and the epitome of beauty – because at 40, she is now officially considered an “old woman” as she has reached the average life expectancy for women. Through a rigorous combination of fasting, exercise, and appearance, she tries to continue to live up to her own image – and risks collapsing because of it. Finally, she escapes the confines of the court, traveling from Vienna to England and Hungary, visiting former lovers and political allies, on the one hand to revive memories of her exciting youth, but also to maintain control over her legacy.
