The computer on board the Soviet shuttle Buran.

If you are a computer enthusiast, you may have seen this article originally published on tom’sHARWARE on October 29, 2022 by Yannick Guerrini, and then posted elsewhere.

The history of the conquest of space is related to the history of computing, and therefore it is interesting to read this article. The only downside is that it only pertains to western space apart from the Soviet shuttle system Puran (photo above).

It will be seen that processors/computers in space always lag behind in performance those “that are on Earth”. Perhaps with the exception of modern satellite production in large quantities. Ordinary ships, robotic interplanetary probes and other space stations usually require at least a good ten years to develop and are often limited in development.

And then they must include redundancy, not to mention space-radiation susceptibility which means protection that is hard to guarantee (hence redundancy!). In short, it’s anything but standard.
