Despite knowing he had pneumonia, Elton John took the stage. But in the middle of it all, the singer’s voice fails. He cries and has to stop the show. Fans in New Zealand would not know the background until later.

Elton John ended a concert in Auckland, New Zealand early. Reason: While performing, the British singer suddenly lost his voice. When he had to say goodbye on stage, he burst into tears. Shortly afterward, he gave his fans an explanation for the sudden cancellation on Instagram.

“I was diagnosed with pneumonia this morning but I was determined to give you the best show possible,” Elton John captioned a photo of himself during his emotional performance at Mount Smart Stadium. You can also see a staff member helping the 72-year-old out of the theater.

The singer continued: “I played and sang with all my heart until my voice was no longer able to participate. I am very disappointed and upset and I apologize. I gave everything I could.” Elton John is also thankful for the exceptional support and love he has received from his New Zealand fans. I will be forever grateful to them.

Elton John is scheduled to perform two more shows in Auckland next Tuesday and Thursday as part of his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour. As one of the singer’s promoters said, according to local media reports, the tour will continue with the remaining concerts in Auckland after an extra day’s break, which the doctor prescribed.
