New Zealand and Australia win the opening match of the Women’s World Cup

This win is important for New Zealand and its women’s national football team: Hosts New Zealand won the opening match of the World Cup. Coach Jitka Klimková’s players were emotional after the match. New Zealand has never won a FIFA World Cup match – neither men nor women.

The result of the match against Norway was even more historic. New Zealand won 1-0 (0-0) on Thursday at Eden Park in Auckland.

Australia wins the opening match of the World Cup against Ireland

Second hosts Australia also won their first World Cup match. The Matildas achieved a 1-0 (0-0) win over Ireland in Sydney on Thursday. In Group A, the two teams, New Zealand and Australia, will meet Switzerland and the Philippines in the context of the finals.

Alleged lioness in Berlin: Police cordon off search area

More than 100 police forces are searching for an escaped predator that may be a lioness in southern Berlin and neighboring Brandenburg. Helicopters, search dogs and even armored vehicles are used. In the afternoon, the police blocked the Königsweg Street in Berlin-Zehlendorf, where the animal was suspected. Berlin police wrote on Twitter that they wanted to make sure “veterinarians can safely stun the animal”.

In the morning, a video went viral in which the alleged lioness was seen on the side of the road for a few seconds. Where the animal came from is still not clear. Residents of affected areas must stay home for safety reasons.

Shot dead in Auckland before the Women’s World Cup

A deadly attack took place in Auckland shortly before the start of the Women’s World Cup. A gunman killed at least two people in a New Zealand city. The perpetrator was also killed, the police announced Thursday morning. In addition to the dead, other people were said to have been injured.

It is not yet clear if the crime is linked to the World Cup. The shots were fired in the capital’s business hub not far from the World Cup fan base.

The tournament will be held in New Zealand and neighboring Australia from July 20 to August 20. Football New Zealand expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the victims. So there is no increased danger for the fans.

Iraq expels the Swedish ambassador – because of planning to burn the Koran

Because the Qur’an was to be burned in an anti-Islamic act in Stockholm, a serious diplomatic crisis broke out between Sweden and Iraq. The Swedish embassy in Baghdad was stormed on Thursday night, and the Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, expelled the Swedish ambassador. Even a complete severance of diplomatic relations is an option for Iraq.

However, the planned burning of the Qur’an never took place. Only two people participated in the event, and there is a video present. According to the Swedish news agency TT, one of the men can be seen trampling on the holy books of Islam. He is said to have tried to set the book on fire, but it did not burn.
