Educators announce agreement to acquire Mobile Tower Business from Spark New Zealand

The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board announced today that it will acquire a 70% stake in Spark New Zealand’s mobile tower business for NZ$900 million. Spark’s TowerCo business (“TowerCo”) is one of New Zealand’s leading tower companies with 1,263 locations.

Under the terms of the acquisition, Spark New Zealand has entered into a 15-year agreement with TowerCo (as well as renewal rights) to secure access to existing and new towers, with a commitment to build 670 locations over the next 10 years.

Teachers Ontario is a major investor in New Zealand, including its recent private equity investments in Abano Healthcare Group and Asia Pacific Healthcare Group, as well as an extensive portfolio of forest assets.

The deal is under regulatory review and is expected to close in late 2022.
