Administrator Wayne Costello said the conservation department in the small town of Hast, west of Mount Aspiring National Park, has so far only received three applications for the biodiversity supervisor position. “The main goal is to lead a team to save New Zealand’s rarest kiwi species, Hast Tukwika,” Costello says.
The mission involves patrolling stunning scenery and caring for kiwis – a flightless New Zealand bird – penguins and lizards. “The West Coast is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream world,” says Costello, who acknowledges, however, that despite the “exceptional beauty” of the towering mountains that surround Haast and its region, the post has its downsides. “It’s quite secluded,” he admits: “The nearest supermarket is two hours away, the hospital is four hours away.”

In addition, the population of this shy and “extremely nervous” kiwi is about 500 individuals and it is not easy to find them. “Some of the places to go are by jet boat, or more often by helicopter because it’s a very remote and difficult area.” Despite the lack of interest, Costello remains optimistic and has decided to extend the application period for another three weeks.
