‘Dog Power’, Netflix: What you need to know about the Golden Globes winner

Netflix “The Power of the Dog” has been nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards – three winners

Western drama The Power of the Dog, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst, received seven nominations for this year’s Golden Globe Award. The film has been available on Netflix since the beginning of December and has received very good reviews internationally. Kenneth Branagh’s drama “Belfast” about the conflict in Northern Ireland was also nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards. “Belfast” opens in German cinemas on February 24th.

Ultimately, The Power of the Dog garnered three Golden Globes, making it the biggest winner of the night: the Netflix movie won Best Drama, Jane Campion for Best Director, and Cody Smit McPhee for Best Supporting Actor.

Last year, the film’s director, Jane Campion, took home the Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival, a major indication that The Power of the Dog could have a bigger role at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards, too. The film was previously invited to the Cannes Film Festival, albeit out of competition, at which point the producers declined the invitation in the hope that they could premiere in competition at a major festival, which they did in Venice. Since then, the film has caused quite a stir. (Read also: Cinema: These are the films we are happy to see in January 2022)

What is the movie talking about?

About masculinity – in a very complex way. The western drama is set in the year 1925 on a farm in the US state of Montana. In the vastness of the picturesque landscape, the unequal brothers Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George (Jesse Plemons) live according to radically different views of life, which also give completely opposite portraits of the male from the outside.
