Anime: Makoto Shinkai’s new movie “Suzumi no Tojimari” in cinemas starting in 2023
Crunchyroll announced today that it has partnered with Sony Pictures and Wild Bunch International to release Makoto Shinkai Suzume no Tojimari’s upcoming animated film (working title) worldwide (except Asia) in early 2023. The announcement came during this year’s Cannes Film Festival. .
Crunchyroll will distribute the film in North America, while Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will distribute the film in Latin America, Australia/New Zealand, the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Europe. Crunchyroll, Sony Pictures and Wild Bunch International will release the film in French and German-speaking Europe.
Shinkai announced the film last December and is set to hit Japanese theaters on November 11, 2022. Shinkai is the director and screenwriter at CoMix Wave Films. Masayoshi Tanaka returns as character designer, Kenichi Tsuchiya as animation director, and Takumi Tanji as art director.

Suzume no Tojimari is Shinkai’s thirteenth directing effort after Weathering With You, which was released in 2019 and won Best Animated Film at the 43rd Japan Academy Film Awards. Shinkai won Best Director of the Year at the 40th Japan Academy Film Awards in 2016 for his movie Your Name, which was also the third highest-grossing Japanese film in the world. Shinkai’s previous works include The Garden of the Words, A Journey to Agartha, and 5 Centimeters per Second, among others.

“Suzume no Tojimari” is the growth story of 17-year-old protagonist Suzume. The events take place in various disaster zones in Japan, where Suzumi has to close the doors responsible for the destruction there.
Suzumi’s journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu (southwest Japan) when she meets a young man searching for a specific door. Suzumi then finds one weather-threatening door that stands erect amid the ruins, as if untouched by any disaster. Attracted by her power, Suzumi looks for the handle… Doors begin to open across Japan, causing devastating disasters all around. Suzume must close these gates to prevent further damage.
Stars, sunset and morning sky. Within this realm it seemed as if all time had merged with the sky…
Unprecedented landscapes, farewell encounters… Countless challenges await Suzumi on her journey. Despite all the obstacles, Suzumi’s adventure sheds a ray of hope in our struggle against the worst fears and bonds that define everyday life. This story of closing doors that connects our past with our present and future will leave a lasting impression in all of our hearts.
