It’s an influential artist’s biography of the 20th century: it’s been on many lips since 2012’s “Searching for Sugarman” at the latest. We are talking about the life of the popular musician Rodriguez. He was born on July 10, 1942 as Sixto Diaz Rodriguez in Detroit, into a poor working-class family. The experiences that he gathers as part of this stratum of society later become the main themes of his songs. He released one albums each in 1970 and 1971, both of which are steeped in mystery. Although his music was gaining a certain level of fame in Australia and New Zealand, Sixto Rodriguez soon left his music career and returned to his job as a demolition worker in Detroit. What he doesn’t know at this point: In South Africa, isolated under apartheid, his music is spreading like wildfire and two ardent fans are searching for an artist they know nothing about. For Rodriguez’s 80th birthday, “Spielräume Spezial” presented the music and story of this forgotten and rediscovered musician.
