Pure Elation (Micharel Walker) races away with the Percy Sykes Stakes.
Sir Owen Glenn had a tough call to make choosing between Gold Coast Commonwealth Games action or today’s Randwick race meeting, but thankfully he got it right.
The internationally-known Kiwi entrepreneur and philanthropist arrived at Randwick in time to see his colour to victory by fellow Kiwi Michael Walker on Pure Elation in the Gr. 2 Percy Stakes.
“I could have stayed up at the Gold Coast for the hockey and rugby sevens, but I thought ‘what the hell, I think I’d better get down to Sydney’,” Glenn told www.theinformant.co.nz.
The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Pure Elation lined up as the favourite for today’s two-year-old feature and despite racing greenly, she broke the race record in clocking 1:10.08 for the 1200 metres, with a final 600-metre section in 34.54 seconds.
“She’s a good filly this,” enthused Glenn, after the daughter of boom sire I Am Invincible had made the step up from a midweek Warwick Farm win.
The yellow and white Glenn colours have been carried by numerous quality gallopers, perhaps the best of them all a past star of The Championships in Criterion. Besides Pure Elation, Criterion’s half-brother Comin’ Through has been doing a sterling job lately with a Gr. 2 Ajax Stakes win and second placing to Happy Clapper in the Gr. 1 Doncaster Mile.
Perhaps flushed with the ‘pure elation’ of his latest win, Sir Owen found some surprising words to describe what was about to unfold at Randwick later today when Comin’ Through lined up against Winx, Happy Clapper and co in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes..
“The sports writers over here have forgotten about Comin’ Through, but you wait. He’s going to go out and kick Winx’s arse!”
