Microsoft has released a series of special updates for Windows 10 that are supposed to fix the printer problem that occurs on some computers. After installing security updates as of March 9, 2021, some users have had blue screens with error messages when they want to print or when using certain applications like LibreOffice and Microsoft Office.
Users had to settle for the solutions heise described or uninstall the related security update. Some Kyocera printer users have also successfully installed new Type 4 printer drivers. The following updates should fix the APC_INDEX_MISMATCH blue screen when printing:
- KB5001567: Out of Range Update for Windows 10 2004 and 20H2 as well as the corresponding Windows Server releases
- KB500156: Out of range update for Windows 10 version 1909 and server version 1909

As for the Windows 10 LTSC variant, which debuted in July 2015, no update has been released yet. The sole purpose of these special updates is to fix the crashes with blue screens when printing from Windows 10. The above updates replace the security updates of March 9, 2021.
Uninstall the cumulative security update
Feedback from officials suggests that the latest cumulative security update from March 9, 2021 should be uninstalled before installing the special update. There are also initial observations from those affected that private updates on individual systems did not fix or do APC_INDEX_MISMATCH blue screens. Other printing problems (For example with Dymo LabelWriter).
If needed, you should also check if the latest printer drivers (usually Kyocera drivers) are installed and whether a previous uninstall of the March 9, 2021 update was helpful. Before installing updates, administrators should also read related Microsoft support articles for known bugs.
Only recommended for affected machines
Special updates are available via Windows Update if you go to the Windows Update page via Update & Security on the Settings page. There the “Check for updates” button is selected so that the updates to be installed are displayed. Microsoft recommends that you install special updates only on affected devices. This could also be the reason that updates are not available on Windows Server Update Service (WSUS).
However, administrators have the option to remove special updates from a Microsoft Update Catalog Manually download and install. Moreover, downloaded update packages can be imported into WSUS and distributed to clients. If there is error 0x80131509 in WSUS, if it is running on Windows Server 2012 / R2, it can be found in The author’s blog has a solution.
