Unscheduled updates fix the Windows 10 printer blue screen issue

Microsoft has released a series of special updates for Windows 10 that are supposed to fix the printer problem that occurs on some computers. After installing security updates as of March 9, 2021, some users have had blue screens with error messages when they want to print or when using certain applications like LibreOffice and Microsoft Office.

Users had to settle for the solutions heise described or uninstall the related security update. Some Kyocera printer users have also successfully installed new Type 4 printer drivers. The following updates should fix the APC_INDEX_MISMATCH blue screen when printing:

  • KB5001567: Out of Range Update for Windows 10 2004 and 20H2 as well as the corresponding Windows Server releases
  • KB500156: Out of range update for Windows 10 version 1909 and server version 1909
  • KB5001568Windows 10 Version 1809 and Server Edition 1809 Out of Range Update (Enterprise / Education / LTSC)
  • KB5001565: Update out of range for Windows 10 version 1803 and server version 1803 (Enterprise / Education)

As for the Windows 10 LTSC variant, which debuted in July 2015, no update has been released yet. The sole purpose of these special updates is to fix the crashes with blue screens when printing from Windows 10. The above updates replace the security updates of March 9, 2021.

Feedback from officials suggests that the latest cumulative security update from March 9, 2021 should be uninstalled before installing the special update. There are also initial observations from those affected that private updates on individual systems did not fix or do APC_INDEX_MISMATCH blue screens.
