UN Secretary-General says he is ‘horrified’ by Taliban violations of women’s rights

Antonio Guterres described the situation in which Afghanistan is sinking ‘An unimaginable tragedy’, with the Taliban approaching power.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, “terrifled” Friday, August 13th via information on Taliban violations of women’s rights in Afghanistan.

“I am deeply concerned by early reports that the Taliban are imposing severe restrictions on human rights in the areas they control, The Secretary-General of the United Nations expressed his regret to the press. It is especially horrifying and sad to see the hard-earned rights of Afghan girls and women being taken away from them.”

The Taliban nearly reached the gates of Kabul on Friday, having captured nearly half of the Afghan provincial capitals, all of which fell in just eight days. Antonio Guterres said nearly 241,000 people have already had to flee in the face of the relentless advance of the militants, describing the situation in which Afghanistan is sinking as ‘An unimaginable tragedy’.
