Four players have been eliminated from the squad which now has the required 23 players. Somewhat surprisingly, 20-year-old Ryula Chimaili did not have the cut. The midfielder, who hardly played for Freiburg this season, is no longer with Ella Ton, Amira Arfaoui and Elvira Herzog. Fabian Hamm, who took a break last week due to his professional commitments, is back preparing for the World Cup and is definitely in the squad.

Miracle Penny there

The youngest player in the squad is Faith Beene, who made a strong international debut against Zambia last week. She will celebrate her 17th birthday two days after Switzerland made its World Cup debut in New Zealand. The YB striker is considered the greatest talent in Swiss women’s football. “We didn’t just take it with us as a perspective player,” Grings asserts. “She can make a big splash at the World Cup.”

About a year ago, Valais debuted in the Women’s Super League with YB Women. At the end of the season, Benny scored five goals in 17 matches and set up five more goals. At the European Under-17 Championships in May, she led Switzerland to the semi-finals with two goals and three assists and was voted into the Team of the Tournament.

The 16-year-old showed her class in the friendly match against Zambia. At the break and when the score was 1: 3, coach Inka Grings brought the young striker. And just nine minutes later, she laid the ball on Serena Jubilee, who shortened the score to 2: 3 and brought the national team back to life.

The future of the national team

The coach and his teammates explode into hymns of praise when they talk about the team’s youngster. Inca Grings applauds Penny’s “insane dynamism” and the “extreme target menace” she radiates.

“She is a huge and carefree talent, in addition to being technically strong, quick and very smart in football. Eman Ithra is great » Recording player Ana Maria Krnogorcevic tells SRF. And Ramona Bachmann sees the “future of the national team” as a teenager.

Benny comes from a football family. Aunt Noemi has played 42 times for the national team. Father Nikola was a goalkeeper at Sion, Schaffhausen, Aarau and Weil. The mother comes from Brazil, which is why Neymar is a role model for the young striker – “but only on the pitch,” she assures.

The YB player said the fact that she was even considered for a World Cup candidacy is very special. “Participating in the World Cup is, of course, my goal and my dream, but it will be a reward.” A dream come true.

Switzerland will start the World Cup against the Philippines on July 21. The other group opponents in Dunedin and Hamilton are Norway and hosts New Zealand. The team will play its last friendly match against Morocco in Winterthur on Wednesday.

July 11, 1966: This balmy summer evening began with the belated return of three Swiss players to the World Cup Hotel. This “Sheffield night” will darken Swiss football for almost two years.

Something unique happened shortly before the Swiss left for the World Cup in England. Midfielder Philippe Potierre will be omitted from the 22-man squad for the World Cup. Because instead of going to training camp, he prefers to go on vacation with his wife from June 25th to July 2nd. Which of course is not allowed.
