Sky New Zealand is updated using Lawo IP technology

Professional Audio & Television (PAT), systems integrator and partner of Lawo in Australia and New Zealand, has completed the delivery and commissioning of a Lawo mc²56 48-fader production console on Sky New Zealand, PAT announced today.

Sky is New Zealand’s leading entertainment company, offering the widest range of live sports, movies, shows, documentaries and breaking news. Sky offers all New Zealanders the right choice, be it via ‘Sky Box’ and associated app ‘Sky Go’ for premium live customers or via streaming services ‘Sky Sport Now’ for sports or ‘Neon’ for movies and entertainment. Sky also owns the free Prime Channel.

The previous Lawo mc²66 mixer and TDM-based Nova73 system were to be replaced by an existing IP sound system. Sky chose to work with PAT and Lawo for design, upgrade and operation. The new mc²56MkIII console is powered by two fully redundant Basic Lawo A__UHD audio engines (1RU each). The RTW TM7 Audio Meter is integrated into the console, giving users a reliable overview of their audio signals. Lawo’s cloud-native HOME management platform is responsible for connecting, managing and securing all aspects of voice in Sky’s live production environment. Six PowerCore I / O gateway points with full support for ST2110, AES67, RAVENNA and DANTE are used for this. Media network recording is by Meinberg M1000 with two HPS100 HD PTP units. Each card supports up to 2,048 PTP clients in unicast mode and over 250,000 delay requests per second in multicast or mixed mode, or over 400,000 NTP requests per second. In the second phase of the project, the existing Lawo mc²36 controller and several Lawo V__pro8 video processors will be integrated into Sky’s new IP workflows.

Sky New Zealand’s Justin Lawo, platform owner Broadcast Core, explains: “Sky have been a customer of Lawo’s since the early 2000s and we’ve had very good experiences with their technology so far. When we started our first AoIP project, we wanted to work with a company that had Proven track record and deep knowledge of IP technology. Also, he must have experience implementing large projects and solutions and be willing to become an extension of the Sky team. This is exactly what PAT delivered.Lawo and PAT went above and beyond our requirements, developing strong relationships with Our employees, collaborated on the design and even accepted last minute changes without complaining and with a smile. We look forward to continuing to work with this recipe for success in the future.

Mike Hurd, Senior Solutions Architect at PAT, comments: “When the Sky team approached us to help them transition to IP and replace their reliable Lawo mc²66 AP controller, we knew immediately what we needed to do. This project is an excellent example of how to successfully complete a project from Through trust, communication and collaboration, on time, on budget and with the best possible outcome. It’s great to see another Lawo mc² mixer with Lawo A__UHD IP audio processing cores up and running in New Zealand!A big thank you to the entire Sky team for believing in PAT and for letting us be a part from him “.
