Science: Researchers discover strange creatures in the Antarctic ice
Once again comes across Science For amazing surprises. In Antarctica, a British research team from the British Antarctic Survey made an amazing discovery.
Researchers will actually only have one to attempt to investigate this hostile space Science– deserved award. But what they then discovered at a height of 900 meters under the ice is strange and interesting at the same time. Spektrum.de reports.
Science: the research team under the harshest conditions
In fact, Huw Griffiths and colleagues face a very different challenge: To extract core sediment from the sea floor in the southeastern Weddell Sea, scientists are drilling a hole in the one kilometer thick Filchner-Ronne ice shelf.

In addition, the British researchers endured freezing temperatures for nearly three months, slept in a tent and ate dried meals. Because in order to be able to dig the hole, 20 tons of snow must first be thawed and thus 20000 liters of water must be generated.
This is Antarctica:
- Earth’s southern continent
- About 14 million square kilometers in size
- The Arctic ice sheet covers it almost completely
- Here, too, is Earth’s south pole
With a GoPro instrument and camera, the sediment must then be collected through the elaborately constructed hole. But the mosque is back empty. Instead, the GoPro brought an astounding science discovery.

Science: Researchers encounter unpredictable organisms
In a video from a GoPro camera, researchers discovered sponge-like creatures colonizing a rock below. So these must be living creatures.
Surprisingly, such a discovery had never been seen before during drilling campaigns in Antarctica. However, little is known about the ecosystem under the ice shelf.

How “Spektrum.deAccording to reports, sea ice covers 1.5 million square kilometers around Antarctica. So far only the size of the tennis court can be searched.
So far, the British Antarctica Survey has not been able to know what kind of creature is on the deep sea floor and what it is feeding on it.
The creatures must rely on a fairly steady supply of food in the form of sea snow, because nothing else can be found under the deep antarctic ice shelf.
But it can be said with certainty that living things live in complete darkness. (MKX)
