Microsoft unveils a new file explorer

Microsoft continues to work on redesigning the interface with Windows 11. File Explorer is next on the list and the company revealed the first images during its Build conference.

File Explorer is arguably the most used app on Windows 11. It’s impossible to actually use the operating system without having to open or move files at one point or another. Therefore its interface is very delicate and cannot be slightly modified by Microsoft. Tens of millions of users encounter it every day.

With Windows 11, Microsoft has made an extensive modification of the interface of its operating system to refresh it. It’s File Explorer’s turn to see the big changes.

File Explorer’s new design was featured in a video released by Panos Panay, senior Surface and Windows product manager at Microsoft. The company could touch on a few words at its Build conference in Seattle.

Among the changes seen in the video, we discover a new presentation of folders that collect images. We can see some details such as the duration of the videos or the format of the image with a more modern presentation than what we know today on Windows 11.

That’s not all. We also see that Microsoft has reformulated the presentation of documents such as those written with the tools of Word, PowerPoint and Excel, but also PDFs. They are offered from the File Explorer home page in the form of recommendations. One document was submitted because it received comment, while another is linked to a calendar date.

The interface of this new version of File Explorer uses a design that is closer to Windows 11 icons, especially in terms of tabs or the toolbar. The latter is now placed under tabs, which brings File Explorer closer to a web browser in terms of appearance.

It is not yet known when this new version of File Explorer will be introduced in Windows 11. It may arrive with an update planned for the end of the year which should also integrate Windows Copilot, assisted by AI way ChatGPT.
