More news about culture

Without the “same procedure as every year!” There is no New Year’s Eve. Up to 15 million viewers are enjoying a “Dinner for One” scene from 1963. Miss Sophie (May Warden) is celebrating her 90th birthday in it.

As every year, she invites her four closest friends to dinner: Sir Toby, Admiral von Schneider, Mr. Pomeroy, and Mr. Winterbottom. However, they are long dead, which is why Miss Sophie sits alone at the table while butler James (Freddie Frinton) supplies the guests in turn.

Now UFA Fiction’s “Dinner for Five” series wants to explain who Messrs. von Schneider, Pommeroy, Sir Toby and Winterbottom are, why they don’t sit at the table and what they do with Miss Sophie. Tommy Wosch, producer and showrunner at UFA Fiction, says of the project: “As a kid, I always asked myself why the four guys aren’t sitting at the table and what they look like. Of course it would be a dream to have a New Year’s classic here for the whole family to produce. What with the beginning of ‘Faking Hitler’ – everyone finds the idea exciting and would like to be a part of it.”

Six episodes of the series

According to the announcement, six 45-minute episodes are planned. So Dinner for Five should be a “romantic, funny, visually stunning and contemporary adventure series”. It is based on the book Dinner for Five – A Killer for One. Filming for the series is expected to start in late 2023, according to the production company.

About the content of “Dinner for Five” she says: In 1921 five men “could not have been more different for the hand of Miss Sophie”. The setting is a country castle near Eastbourne in England. Miss Sophie is about to turn 39. Since her parents died, she has been living alone in the castle. Her butler Mortimer, who faithfully served her parents, supports her.

However, Miss Sophie faces financial problems and decides to get married. She asks Mortimer to select four financially strong bachelors who are willing to marry and invite them to their birthday parties. “The participants are Herren von Schneider, a Prussian military man, Sir Toby, a true adventurer, Pomeroy, an engaged Frenchman, and Winterbottom, an Englishman and colonist.” In order to ensure another year of freedom and to overcome her childhood flirtation with James, the son of a butler, she devises a contest for the four bachelors: who will bring her the best birthday present on her fortieth birthday next year, and will she marry. ..
