Yoon calls for overcoming global challenges through scientific cooperation

Dubai, January 17th. (Yonhap) — President Yoon Seok Yul called on the international community to unite efforts in science and technology to address global challenges such as climate change, epidemics and population aging.

Yoon made the call during the Future Vision Forum in Dubai on Tuesday, the last day of his four-day official visit to the United Arab Emirates.

“We must now overcome common crises of humanity, such as climate change, epidemics, aging and declining growth, through solidarity and cooperation based on science and technology,” he said.

He added, “We must design together a future in which human dignity is respected as the most valuable value and achieved through international solidarity.”

Yun emphasized the importance of choosing and controlling technology, saying that the right to do so is as important as the right to life.

“In order to properly use the power that is bestowed upon us, we must first design the good future we need to move towards, and for that we need design criteria,” he said. “The value that we cannot and must not give up is human dignity.”

Yoon warned of the dangers of over-reliance on artificial intelligence (AI), saying that humans may end up handing over all of their decision-making powers to AI.

He said, “Science and technology must constantly evolve through innovation, but they fully contribute to the realization of the values we pursue.”
