Why Oscar-winner Volker Schlöndorff presents his own film in 44 cinemas
Berlin. Director Volker Schlöndorff (83) wanted to present it himself in 44 cinemas in Germany so that his current documentary would succeed despite the poor expectations from its distributor. In The Forest Maker, the Academy Award winner tells the story of agronomist Tony Reno, who developed the technology for reforesting the green parts of the Sahel. “Der Waldmacher is close to my heart, I want to be seen,” said Schlöndorff of Augsburger Allgemeine. “But other distributors and experts said, you don’t even need to bring the movie to the cinema, no one goes to the show’s cinema anymore anyway. Documentary? Too bad! Etc…”

That is why he decided to go on tour with the film. “Instead of sitting at home watching the news, I’d rather do something active,” said Schlöndorff. “Wherever I’ve been on my tour so far, movie theaters have been sold out. Cinema operators are seeing people coming back to the cinema, and were happy to see a house that ran out completely again.
