Victorious in Canada, New Zealanders officially qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics

New Zealand is the first team to qualify for Paris Olympics 2024 through the World Rugby Sevens series.

The top four in the standings at the end of the season win an Olympic quota and the fourth consecutive success achieved during the Vancouver stage this Sunday, March 5, allows the Olympic champions not to catch up.

In total, they won 98 points out of a possible 100 in the first five stages of the season, with 29 successes in 30 matches. Undisputed dominance evidenced by a 14-point lead over Australia, which was Black ferns Dominate in the final (19-12) in Canada.

France is currently in fourth place with 66 points, but Les Blues already has a stake as host country. If they finish in the top four, then fifth place in the World Rugby Sevens Series will qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Before the final two stages of the season, it will be Ireland on 58 points.

With a win offering 20 points and New Zealand more than 50 points clear of Fiji, who are currently in 6th place, they will no longer be able to break out of the top 5 (or top 4 if France exits the top 4).

Two more Paris 2024 destined for the stage in Hong Kong, China?

With New Zealand qualified, there are only three Olympic stakes left for the 2024 Paris Games that will be allocated to women’s rugby via the World Rugby Sevens series. And two of them could be awarded as soon as possible in the next one scheduled to take place in Hong Kong, China, from March 31 to April 2.

The Australians will qualify if they finish at least ninth. For the Americans, finishing at least eighth in Hong Kong, China, would also mean a quota for Paris 2024.

Note that four men’s quotas will also be awarded thanks to the World Rugby Sevens Series ranking. Four stages from the end, no country has secured its qualification. The provisional fourth place after the Vancouver stage consists of New Zealand, Argentina, France and Fiji.

As with the women, if France finishes the season in the top four, a quota will be allocated to Paris 2024 for the fifth season which is currently Australia.

Between now and the 2024 Paris Olympics, seven additional quotas will be allocated to each gender through the regional qualifying tournaments and the final Olympic repechage tournament.
