As an agreement on the distribution of key positions in the European Union approached on Monday evening, the leaders of the European People's Party demanded that half of the mandate of the President of the European Council be given to them, while the other part goes to the Socialist Party. The final decision is expected to be issued at the summit on June 27 and 28.
Christian Democrat Ursula von der Leyen will have to wait until the next summit, scheduled for June 27-28, is officially confirmed for a second five-year term as head of the European Commission. If the twenty-seven did not reach a formal agreement on Monday evening after dinner, it was due to the appetite of the conservative European People's Party prime ministers who claimed that the future head of the European Council of Heads of State and Government, who would be the socialist António Costa, former Portuguese prime minister, would serve only one term. Its term is two and a half years before the governor gives way, while it is known that the incumbent always serves two terms. This desire to rip off the socialists derailed the summit.
However, the agreement was so close that no one opposed the names of future “top office” holders proposed by the first three political families in the European Parliament: Ursula von der Leyen, António Costa and the incumbent liberal Kaja Kallas. Prime Minister of Estonia, for the Union Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
