Tyrolean monk as translator – South Tyrol News

Bolzano – The South Tyrol Cultural Institute, in cooperation with the University of Innsbruck, is organizing an international conference on the theme “Heinrich Haller – Tyrolean monk as translator” from Monday, September 25 to Wednesday, September 27, at Kolpinghaus Bosen. The seminar begins on Monday at 10:00 am

This International Conference on Medieval Germanic Studies addresses the monk Heinrich Haller, who came from a middle-class Innsbruck family. Haller lived and worked at the Allengelberg Charterhouse in Schnals in the third quarter of the 15th century. It is about the life and work of this Tyrolean Carthusian monk. His work as a translator into the “General German” dates back to the time of his stay at Senalis Charterhouse (1464 to 1471).

The management of the conference is in the trusted hands of Elisabeth de Philippe Goude, Yvonne Kathryn, Klaus Amann, Anna Pinter and Max Seiler from the University of Innsbruck. Experts from Austria, Germany, Italy, England, Spain and New Zealand are participating in the international symposium.

On the morning of Monday 25 September, Gertraud Zindel and Anna Pinter will look at the life and manuscripts of Heinrich Haller. The afternoon continues from 2pm with lectures by Nigel Harris, Jessica Amer, Yvonne Kathrin and Klaus Amann on Heinrich Haller in the context of contemporary translation literature. In the evening at 7 p.m., as a supporting event at the Waaghaus, organized by Euregio Tirol – South Tyrol – Trentino, there will be a lecture organized by Max Seiler on The Monk in the Rose Garden, accompanied by the Innsbruck band Rosarum Flores with music from the time of Heinrich Haller.

On Tuesday 26 September, starting at 9am, presentations by Rossana E. Guglielmetti, Fabiana Rovere and Sebastian Holtzhauer will begin on Navigatio S. Brendani, an Irish epic and one of the European bestsellers – from its origins to Heinrich Haller until today. Martin Kornjak and Lorenzo Luzzi Gallo then deal with the translation works of Heinrich Haller and his models. In the afternoon, the trip to Karthaus starts at 1:30 p.m. There, Benjamin Santer, president of the Chenals Cultural Society, takes you through the former Charterhouse.

On Wednesday, September 27, at 9:00 a.m., work on the Scriptures and devotional writings begins with lectures from Heinrich Haller, and lectures from Maximilian Benz and Andreas Vonach. Tracey Adams and Masia Reutort then deal with Heinrich Haller’s translation of Imitatio Christi in European comparison. The conference ends in the afternoon from 1:30 pm with a walk and a visit to Runkelstein Castle.
