New Zealand will once again become the middle ground for Amazon's “Lord of the Rings” adaptation.
New Zealand's stunning forests, coasts and mountains have served as the backdrop for the Lord of the Rings film adaptations. Amazon has now officially confirmed what had long been suspected: the planned serial version of the fantasy saga based on the novels of J. R. R. Tolkien will also be filmed in the island nation. Pre-production has already begun and things will really kick off in Auckland in the coming months.
The perfect location
“As we searched for the right location to bring the original beauty of Middle-earth in the Second Age to life, we knew we had to find a majestic setting,” explained showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick MacKay of their choice. New Zealand provides home to world-class sets and studios, highly skilled and experienced craftsmen and many other staff.
The two would like to thank the people and government of New Zealand. There was a lot of support in pre-production, especially from responsible partners and collaborations in Auckland.
There are no content details yet
Despite the new announcements, Amazon still owes fans of “The Lord of the Rings” content the details of the series. All that is known is that it will be shown before “Companions” and will also focus on previously unexplored stories. Presumably, the goal of the television adaptation was to clearly distinguish itself from cinema successes.
The first two episodes are directed by director J. A. Bayona (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”). He works alongside his partner Belén Atienza as well as Lindsay Weber (“10 Cloverfield Lane”), Bruce Richmond (“Game Of Thrones”), Gene Kelly (“Boardwalk Empire”), Sharon Tal Yguado, and Jennifer Hutchison (“Breaking Bad”). . Jason Cahill (The Sopranos) and Justin Dobell (Stranger Things) also serve as executive producers.
A release date for “The Lord of the Rings” on Amazon Prime Video has not yet been set.
