At the age of 42, Karl Heymann was officially recognized as suffering from dementia. This dangerous condition arose due to the many blows the former All Black took during his career. Today, the former international prop supports Dementia Auckland, a New Zealand association that helps people with dementia as well as the people around them, and relatives as carers.
