Successful 5G SA trial in New Zealand

(CercleFinance.com) Ericsson today announced a successful 5G standalone trial (5G SA) in New Zealand, with Spark (“New Zealand’s largest telecommunications and digital services provider”) and open source solutions specialist Red Hat.

The 5G SA experiment relied on Ericsson’s native 5G cloud core running on Red Hat OpenShift, integrated with Spark’s 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network for enhanced wireless broadband testing.

“The trial was delivered in an impressive three-month time frame, demonstrating the ease with which stand-alone cloud-native solutions can be deployed,” said Ericsson.

The trial successfully confirmed and validated the technical capabilities of standalone 5G technology on the Spark network.

“This experience with Spark and Red Hat clearly shows the range of capabilities and use cases made possible by a network powered by Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core technology,” commented Emilio Romeo, Head of Ericsson, Australia and New Zealand.
