Pro Hockey League: The Red Panthers comfortably beat New Zealand
The Red Panthers won their 10th match in the Women’s Hockey League 7-0 against New Zealand on Sunday in Antwerp, the second in an 8-game series scheduled at Wilrijkseplein in early July. A fifth success in the competition allows Belgium to rise to fourth place.
Raul Ehren’s players quickly put their mark on the game, scoring two goals in two minutes in the first quarter. The first on a successful deflection by Delphine Marin (sixth) and the second on a sleep by Stephanie Vanden Borre in the Belgian first PC turnaround (seventh). The Black Sticks, who stunned on Saturday by beating Argentina 2-1, failed to unnerve Elodie Picard, as the Belgians doubled their chances.
Charlotte Engelbert scored her tenth goal for the Panthers at the end of the third quarter (42), before a rebound by Marian hit her own goal (47). Playing without a goalkeeper, the New Zealanders still conceded two final goals at the end of the match, by Emily White (54) and Louise Versavel (56), before White set the score at 7-0 (58).
In the standings, the Red Panthers, who lost 0-2 to Australia in their first game Friday in Antwerp, have 20 points in 10 games. They won four matches in Great Britain between the end of May and the beginning of June, having started their campaign with three draws and a defeat. The tournament leader was temporarily occupied by Argentina and Great Britain (29 points), with 15 matches played. The Netherlands follow with 25 units in 9 games, ahead of Belgium who play the return legs against Australia on Monday and New Zealand on Wednesday.
