In the aftermath of the shark attack that took place on Sunday, January 29, 2023, on the Chateau Royal beach in Noumea, the city of Noumea has issued a decree banning swimming on all of the town’s beaches. Îlot Maître and Île aux Canards are also affected by this ban.

The city ordinance of Noumea prohibits swimming on all the city’s beaches until further notice after the shark attack that occurred this morning on the Chateau Royal beach. Swimming is also prohibited on Maître Island and Ile aux Canards. The ordinance went into effect Sunday at the end of the morning, and will remain in effect until further notice, according to the municipality’s press release.

The victim this morning is a 49-year-old woman, a teacher, who was grabbed by a bull shark about 3 to 4 meters away. Then she would swim alone at the level of the third buoy, 100 meters from the shore. It was the woman’s cries that alerted the swimmers. Soon a man on an oar rescued him. According to the first items, she was bitten in the hand and at the level of the thigh and leg. The shark continued its course into the bay and could be seen from the edge of the beach. Firefighters quickly took care of the victim and they were evacuated. Patrols are being conducted in the area.
