ARD and ZDF will broadcast the upcoming Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. This avoids blackout of the TV. After months of betting on the rights, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has now reached an agreement with FIFA under President Gianni Infantino. ARD made the announcement on Wednesday. The tournament will be held from July 20 to August 20.
“I am very pleased that we can now once again give women’s football the stage it deserves,” said Tom Bohro, ARD’s director of sports rights, about the agreement.
There had previously been a worst-case scenario in the room. Infantino complained that TV offers were too low and threatened to refuse the rights to several European countries – including Germany. On the other hand, critics accused FIFA of wanting to increase its revenues under the pretext of gender equality.
