It is only in this area of ​​the South Island that you can find ponamo, which is a jade-like stone close to the hardness of a diamond. Pounamo plays an important role in Maori culture. It is used traditionally to make weapons and jewelry. At the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, the cliffs are made of soft limestone, where the frequent waves leave impressive traces and shapes. And on the Farewell Spit, boobies roam a gorgeous colony. Cape is a sanctuary and breeding ground for New Zealand’s typical birds.
