In 2020, New Zealand’s water utility, Watercare, drilled two giant vertical wells, directly beneath the Mangere wastewater treatment plant, and made a barely believable discovery: Excavations.

Subordinate Excavations Extensive searches were then carried out to discover if there were others, with Watercare dumping piles of earth and stones into a fence next to the factory to aid in the search, which lasted several months. A fruitful search as at least 266 different types of fossils were found. As Bruce Hayward, a scientist with Geomarine Research, explained, “Detailed identification of the fossils shows they were deposited between 3 and 3.7 million years ago.”

The extraordinary discovery was detailed in a New Zealand journal, Geophysics, which says experts have analyzed more than 300,000 fossils, several thousand of which have been transported to the Auckland Museum to bear witness.A unique discoveryAnd for good reason! At least ten species of fossils that were previously unknown will soon have to be named.
