Meryl Streep receiving the Princess of Asturias Award in Spain
American actress Meryl Streep on Wednesday received the Spanish Princess of Asturias Award, one of the most prestigious awards in the Spanish-speaking world, for her “unforgettable interpretations” of “complex female characters” throughout her career that began more than fifty years ago.
He said in a press release that the jury awarded this award to the 73-year-old actress in the arts category.
The jury added, “His honesty and responsibility in choosing his roles, in the service of inspiring and exemplary stories, goes beyond the framework of the screen.”
“I feel incredibly honored to receive this prestigious award from one of the most talented countries and cultures in the world,” the actress said in a statement.
Three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep has starred in more than 60 films, gaining iconic status for roles ranging from Nazi concentration camp survivor to ABBA’s singing mother.
She won her last Oscar in 2012 for her role as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Prior to that, she had won one in 1980 for “Kramer vs. Kramer” and another in 1983 for “Sophie’s Choice”.
This Princess of Asturias Prize, awarded 50,000 euros, is one of eight prizes covering the arts, sciences and other fields that are awarded each year by the Foundation named in honor of Princess Leonor, heir to the throne.
Previous winners in the Arts category have included American directors Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, Austrian director Michael Haneke and American architect Frank Gehry.
The various awards will be awarded by King Felipe VI of Spain during a ceremony organized in October and broadcast live on Spanish television.
