Air New Zealand plans to provide its passengers with real beds in economy class. But they will only be accessible for a few hours by plane and you will have to wait until 2024 to take advantage of them…
La Premiere is disappearing more and more from airline offerings, while business continues to move forward, as does premium eco-class.
But Air New Zealand also wants to promote and enrich its economy class offering.
It is true that Air New Zealand flights to connect Europe or the United States are often very long and comfort is a very important point in this type of trip.
To improve its service, the company will offer a 2,024-bed Skynest that passengers can book for 4 out of the 16 hours of the Auckland-New York flight.
However, the company did not disclose how much it would cost to rent these beds for those naps at 10,000 feet.
The 6 beds will be installed on B787-9s that will be put into service by Air New Zealand.
“We wanted to offer our economy class customers the option to lie down, and that’s how Skynest was born. It will be a real game-changer,” said Greg Foran, CEO of Air New Zealand.
The six beds will be located between the Eco Cabin and the Eco Premium Cabin. The beds will be arranged as in sleeper trains with 2 columns of 3 beds. Beds will be provided with privacy curtains, reading lights, a USB socket and a fan. It will be 1.95m long and 73cm wide and will be fitted with a seat belt.
These beds were first tested in 2020 with 200 customers at Air New Zealand’s Innovation Lab in Auckland. Air New Zealand aims to offer this offer on ultra-long haul flights such as Acukland-New York launched last year or Auckland-Dallas.
It is worth noting that apart from this offer, Air New Zealand’s new B787-9 aircraft will be equipped with the new Business Premier Live program with 8 suites, 42 Business Class seats and 125 Economy Class seats.
