Leila Fernandez and Bianca Andreescu have yet to say their last word at Roland Garros
Although they were eliminated in singles, Kebekir Leila Fernandez and Canada’s Bianca Andreescu still had hope of leaving Paris with a trophy in their luggage.
In fact, the two players are still competing in doubles — female for one, mixed for the other — at the Roland Garros tournament that ends on Sunday. In the case of Fernandez, she appears to have developed great chemistry with American Taylor Townsend, having reached the final in Miami and the semi-finals in Madrid earlier this year.
In Porte d’Auteuil, the duo who finished 10th at the start of the competition will have their quarter-final duel on Wednesday against Taiwanese Chan Yung-jan and Chan Hao-ching, seeded 14th. In their last match, the two North Americans did well by defeating Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Brazilian Luisa Stefani 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. The victory would earn them a date in the semi-finals with second favorites Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff.
For his part, Andreescu is teaming up with New Zealander Michael Venus. Moreover, the two athletes secured a ticket to Tuesday’s semi-finals. In the quarterfinals, they beat Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk and El Salvador’s Marcelo Arevalo in three sets 7-5, 3-6, 10-6. That victory will earn Ontario a shock Wednesday with compatriot Dabrowski, who dedicates herself entirely to doubles tennis. This could be betting on American Nathaniel Lamons on his side.
In a singles match, Fernandez lost in the second round to Denmark’s Clara Toson, while Andreescu was narrowly beaten 6-1, 6-1 by Ukraine’s Lesya Tsurenko in the third round.
