Laurel Hubbard Makes History, First Olympic Shift
Laurel Hubbard, of New Zealand, was chosen to be the first transgender athlete selected to compete in the Olympics.
The 43-year-old powerlifter has been selected for the women’s weightlifting team by the New Zealand Olympic Committee after recent updates in qualification requirements.
In a statement issued by the NZOC, Hubbard said of his selection:
“I am grateful and delighted with the kindness and support many New Zealanders have given me”
“When I broke my arm at the Commonwealth Games three years ago, I was told that my athletic career may have come to an end. But your support and encouragement and”the love” [affetto] They took me through the darkness.”
Hubbard’s inclusion in the games was met with some criticism, with some arguing that it would have an advantage over its competitors.
However, members of the nation’s government, as well as the Olympic Committee, declared their support for Laurel. New Zealand Sports Minister Grant Robertson said “She deserves to be there and we will support her.”
In addition, one of the contenders for the upcoming games, Australian Karisma Amu Tarrant, has expressed his support. “I have a lot of respect for her and I wish her and the other players the best and I hope we can get together and enjoy the Olympics.“.
Hubbard will compete in the women’s 87kg class in Tokyo.
