Kate Bush thanks her new fans: ‘Running on That Hill’ continues to climb the charts
The best songs ever are immortal. The revival of Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill proves that wisdom once again. No wonder Generation Z, which likely includes many “Stranger Things” viewers, fell in love with Kate Bush’s sentimental anthem. The series, currently in season four on Netflix, recently sparked a song revival, more than 37 years after the original “Running Up That Hill.”
Bush’s song is about the differences between men and women and why communication between these two genders often hits a wall. “I meant to say that a man and a woman cannot understand each other because we are a man and a woman. And if we could swap each other’s roles, (…) I think we would be very surprised and I think that would lead to a greater understanding,” she revealed in an interview in 1992.

And now “Running Up That Hill” is back on the charts. Spotify’s song streams are skyrocketing, topping the iTunes charts, and they’re all furious on TikTok and Twitter — all largely due to Gen Z fans enjoying sharing their new musical discovery. The song had previously only peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart. However, after the Netflix episode came out, the song went to #2 in the UK charts and #1 in Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland and Sweden.
Now Kate Bush has commented on her viral infection multiple times: “Since its last publication, ‘Running Up That Hill’ has reached number one in Norway and Austria. This is great news and we found out today that it has jumped from eighth to fourth in the US.” She writes on her website. Furthermore: “The track is being received in so many positive ways. I’ve never experienced anything like this before! I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported the song in the US. It’s my first time in the top ten singles out there and now it’s in the top five!” Thank you also to the Duffer Brothers – their latest exceptional series, Stranger Things, brings the song to a whole new audience.”
A live video from 1985 was posted today on Kate Bush’s YouTube channel. Kate Bush performs the song on BBC’s Wogan.
