Italians dominate the Copa America final

Auckland / New Zealand (dpa) – Italy dominated the start of the Challenge Final of the 36th edition of the America’s Classic Sailing Cup.

In the duel with Great Britain’s team Patrizio Bertelli leads Luna Rossa after the first day 2-0 against the British crew of Sir Ben Ainsley. The team that booked seven Prada Cup wins can first challenge New Zealand in the Copa America. This will start on March 6th.

For the first time in the Copa America’s 170-year history, the Challenge Final held against Auckland in New Zealand waters is a purely European affair. In the two opening races, the Azores were able to overcome the high speed and good handling of the boat in light and medium winds. “We had a very good presentation today. The second race was close and it could have been different,” said Italian captain Francesco Bruni.

The battle announcement by four-time defeated Olympic champion and rudder “Britannia” Ainsley came immediately: “In the second race we sailed well today. Luna Rossa is better. Today we had a worse ending. That won’t be the case tomorrow.” The series will run on February 14th.
