Indonesia. At least eleven hikers were found dead in the eruption of Marapi volcano

The bodies of at least 11 hikers have been found after the eruption of the Marabi volcano in western Indonesia, a local rescue official told AFP on Monday.

“There are 26 people who have not been evacuated, we found 14, three were found alive and 11 dead.”Abdul Malik, head of Padang’s search and rescue agency, said speaking the day after the eruption.

Ash emitted was observed up to 3,000 meters above its summit. Marabi, with a height of 2,891 meters and whose name means “mountain of fire,” is the most active volcano in Sumatra. According to authorities, it is currently at alert level three on a scale of four.

Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the meeting of continental plates leads to significant volcanic and seismic activity. The country has approximately 130 active volcanoes.
