In the A10, electric trucks will soon be able to recharge while driving

The highway of tomorrow is no longer science fiction! Electric trucks will soon be able to recharge while driving on the A10 motorway, not far from the toll gate in Saint-Arnoult in the Paris region. A consortium led by VINCI Autoroutes* will conduct trials in real conditions on two test sections of two kilometers each, two dynamic freight solutions for heavy goods vehicles. One is based on induction technology, and the other is based on conductive rail technology. Innovative dynamic charging solutions to reduce the size of truck batteries, reduce the limitations related to their autonomy and the need for regular charging.

The project, which is the first of its kind in the world on the highway, aims to allow electric heavy goods vehicles, as well as other types of electric vehicles (buses, utility vehicles, passenger cars, etc.), to experience dynamic charging by induction or rail. On the ground on a highway open to traffic while driving. The experimental site is located on the A10 motorway in the direction of the Paris department, just above the Saint-Arnoult toll gate. The project will start in September 2023 and will continue with tests on a closed CEREMA track in Rouen.

The total budget for the project is 26 million euros and will be distributed over three years. The consortium will benefit from government funding under the France 2030 plan. The aim will then be to equip the first motorway sections across greater distances, for commercial use, in order to deploy the ERS (Long-term Electric Road System) on all major French roads as proposed in Study 2021 issued by the Ministry of Transport.
