“I’m a Barbie girl, in the world of Barbie, life in plastic, it’s cool”: with these words, the European dance group Aqua celebrated worldwide success in 1997, and the song “Barbie Girl” was a hit in Germany and Great Britain, among and elsewhere, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Belgium, Australia and New Zealand topped the charts. After more than 25 years, the Danish-Norwegian music group now wants to exploit the hype surrounding the “Barbie” movie: Aqua announces a “Barbie World Tour” with several concerts in the USA.

Aqua formed in 1989 all but disappeared, but the band never really kept trying to make a comeback after their success in the ’90s. However, the success of “Barbie” is now giving musicians a new impetus. Since May, musicians Len Nystrom, Rene Dave, and Soren Rusted have toured through Italy, Spain, Norway, Denmark, and Canada, among other places, and Aqua has also performed two concerts in the United States. And now they’re announcing 20 more appearances there as part of their “Barbie World Tour.”

“Barbie Girl” also featured prominently on the soundtrack to the hit Hollywood movie: rappers Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice sampled and reinterpreted the Eurodance classic. In the song “Barbie World” Aqua is also named as a songwriter and performer. The song entered the US charts at number seven and also reached the top ten in Germany.

The satirical story “Barbie” from Greta Gerwig tells with a comical pink aesthetic that the famous doll (played by Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) have escaped from their home in Barbieland. This box office hit has already grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide and is the most successful movie of the year.
