In pursuit of AI capabilities, Apple has spoken to rival Facebook

Through Apple Intelligence, the Apple group wants to enhance the capabilities of Siri, a twelve-year-old feature, on mobile phones with generative artificial intelligence.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and rival to Apple, has reportedly discussed with the iPhone maker to provide it with its own generative artificial intelligence (AI) system, revealing the Wall Street Journal Sunday. Apple, which appears to be a latecomer to integrating generative AI into its devices, has just turned to OpenAI (ChatGPT language), to provide future iPhones, iPads, and Macs with a generative AI interface. The system, called Apple Intelligence, will enhance the capabilities of Siri, a twelve-year-old feature, on mobile phones.

According to the newspaper, which quoted sources close to the matter, Facebook has held discussions with Apple about integrating its artificial intelligence model into Apple Intelligence. Just like Facebook, other companies developing generative AI such as Anthropic or Perplexity are keen to be able to link into the ecosystem of a leader like Apple.

Craig Federighi, Apple's vice president of software design, noted in early June that the Apple group also wants to integrate the capabilities of Google's generative AI system, called Gemini, into its devices. According to Canalys, 16% of smartphones delivered this year will be equipped with generative AI features, a percentage it expects to rise to 54% in 2028.
