France and Algeria are turning the page in their latest diplomatic crisis
Algerian president Abdul Majeed Tebboune informed Emmanuel Macron The Elysee Palace announced Friday (March 24th) in a press release that the Algerian ambassador will return to France in the coming days, during a phone call.
“The two leaders discussed the conditions for the departure of Tunisia and the arrival in France of a French-Algerian national, with the support of our consulate in Tunisia, on February 6,” the official said. “This exchange helped clear up the misunderstanding.”
Algeria recalled its ambassador to France last month for consultations, accusing Paris of pressuring the Tunisian authorities to allow the departure of Amira Bouraoui, a journalist and human rights activist, to France, instead of extraditing him to Algeria.
“Strengthen communication channels”
Arrested during major anti-government protests in Algeria in 2019 and released the following year, Amira Bouraoui illegally entered Tunisian territory while escaping the observation of Algerian justice.
Algeria then accused the diplomats of carrying out a “secret and illegal smuggling operation”.

The Elysee indicated that the two presidents “agreed to strengthen communication channels between the concerned departments to prevent the recurrence of this kind of unfortunate misunderstanding.”
