Women receive a quarter of the FIFA men’s prize money at the World Cup. Shortly before the start of the tournament, Swiss footballers do not want to start a debate on this topic. But they would like to adjust in the future.

“The focus is on football,” Ramona Bachmann tells media in Dunedin, New Zealand. Alisha Lehman agrees. “It’s a process,” she says. Compared to the last World Cup, the premium has increased. “We’ll see in 2027 if it will be the same,” Lehmann says.

FIFA pays $30,000 to each player in the group stage. It doesn’t matter how many minutes someone played in the tournament. “If you suddenly get that, it’s a huge amount of money,” says Anna Maria Krnogorcevic. In countries like Spain, this is equivalent to the average annual salary, explains the FC Barcelona player.

In the end, each of the 23 world champions will receive $270,000, for a total of more than $6.2 million. In the current World Cup, FIFA is distributing a total of $110 million. At the men’s World Cup in Qatar last year, there were a total of 440 million people. Just days before the opening match, the Australian players condemned FIFA in a video.

The Swiss first think about the $30,000 that each player on the team receives. “We have a lot of people working in the team,” confirms national record player Crnogorcevic. Players will receive unpaid leave to participate in the tournament. “The reward is very important to them,” she stresses.

The Australian national team players continued to demand in the video that future generations should not have to work alongside their football careers. Fabienne Humm is a Swiss woman who voluntarily took her laptop with her to New Zealand. She says it is not a given that her employer would grant her an indefinite period of leave. Hamm consciously decided to take a two-way street: “For me, it’s a good balance.”

“A giant leap since 2015”

Watch the video of the Australians. “If you look at the development since 2015, it is a huge leap that has been made,” says the striker. At this moment you have to be satisfied. But: “There must be another step in the upcoming tournaments, this is clear.”

In the past, FIFA funds were distributed only to national associations, which in turn determined their own prize money for the teams. Now bonuses are paid directly to World Cup players. The federations receive additional payments – the Future World Champions League, for example, again more than $4 million.

Maryam Tarshon also believes that the FIFA reward is a good start. “This is finally what we deserve and what we are entitled to,” she says. After all, they will work hard every day for football and achieve good results. The amount will have to be considered again in the future. “Women’s football will continue to develop,” says the striker, who works in Dijon and the French Foreign Ministry. (ram/sda)
