Claude Vialat Exhibition at Place des Arts
In addition to the growing success of his exhibitions, both in France (at the Centre Pompidou in 1982) and abroad (Venice Biennale in 1988), Claude Viallat devotes himself to his work as a teacher at the following art schools: La Seyne-sur-Mer, Nice, Limoges, Marseille, Nîmes (where he was director for many years), and finally Paris at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Now retired, he continues his exploratory research. The artist claims multiple references: Matisse, Auguste Chapu, Picasso but also Americans Jackson Pollock, Sam Francis, Jules Olitski, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland…; they are used to build a multi-form work that also integrates the practice of bullfighting painting. The work of the painter Claude Viallat belongs to an aesthetic born in the mid-1960s, which has nothing to do with the question of the total renewal of forms. Starting from a first form, developing it and differentiating it, making it evolve over time and space without abandoning the original composition, this has been Viallat's problem since 1966.
As Jean-Roch Dumont-Saint-Priest, director and curator of the Céret Museum of Modern Art, explains: The exhibition presented at the Espace des Arts du Boulou represents a return to basics for Claude Vialat. His wife, the painter Henriette Bos, was born in 1936 in this Catalan village where her father, François Bos, practiced self-sculpture. The exchanges of these artists mutually nourish their practices and Roussillon becomes the environment for the development of Claude Vialat's work.
