Clashes in Fort-de-France late Sunday afternoon, following the arrest of activist Hervé Pinto

Incidents broke out on General de Gaulle Avenue in Fort-de-France at the end of the day today, Sunday, March 10, 2024. At the origin of the clashes, a new arrest took place of the activist Hervé Pinto, who was transferred to the palace for justice to be heard. Law enforcement forces were deployed around the building.

A climate of tension prevailed at the end of Sunday, March 10, 2024, on Avenue General de Gaulle in Fort-de-France.

Police deployed around the courtroom, where disgruntled individuals, some masked, demonstrated after activist Hervé Pinto was arrested again.

A bus and garbage cans were burned in front of the gas station on the street. Firefighters quickly intervened and traffic was disrupted on part of the street.

Hervé Pinto had already been subjected to legal procedures that he allegedly did not respect. He was arrested again. His supporters, who chanted “Free Pinto” in the street, remained there as night fell.

In a press statement addressed to the press at the beginning of the evening, Governor Jean-Christophe Bouvier said “Strongly condemns these intolerable actions.”.

Investigations will be conducted to arrest and punish the perpetrators of this unacceptable behaviour. Security forces will remain fully mobilized to ensure the protection of the city center.
