Canada opens mixed curling world championship with victory over New Zealand

Canada’s Jean-Michel Menard opened the World Mixed Curling Championships with a 10-3 victory over New Zealander Dean Frutti in six sets on Saturday in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Canada (1-0) started scoring two goals in the first set with the hammer before New Zealand scored (0-1) a goal in the second set. The Canadians then scored six goals in the third to lead 8-1.

New Zealand scored a goal in the fourth before Canada added two more goals in fifth place. After scoring the last point in sixth place, the Frutti track gave way.

Canada resumes the tournament on Sunday against Finland and Denmark. Menard’s third track includes Marie-France Laroche, second Ian Bello and goalkeeper Annie Lemay with Eric Sylvain as coach.
