Four police officers killed in a shooting in Charlotte

A number of police officers died on Monday, April 29, in the state of North Carolina, southeastern United States, while arresting a criminal wanted for illegal possession of a firearm.

Local authorities announced that four were killed and four others were injured on Monday, April 29, in the city of Charlotte, in the southeastern United States. The North Carolina police chief said officers were about to arrest a wanted criminal at his home when they were shot several times.

“We lost heroes today who were simply trying to keep our community safe,” Johnny Jennings said at a news conference.

The White House said President Joe Biden expressed his “condolences and support.”

'An absolutely tragic day'

Police were greeted with gunfire as they intervened on a warrant targeting a man who had already been convicted and then wanted for illegal possession of a firearm.

Law enforcement officers returned fire and fatally shot the suspect before encountering more gunfire from inside the home.

Johnny Jennings said that a 17-year-old boy and a woman were arrested, referring to “a very tragic day for the city of Charlotte and for the police profession.”
