New Zealand doesn't joke about the parity requirement in national sporting bodies. The New Zealand Rugby Union has been fined for failing to respect a rule of 40% women on its board. The association will see the annual public support that Sport New Zealand pays to national associations reduced by NZ$280,000 (€170,000). As of 31 December 2021, New Zealand Rugby was the only one of 65 national sporting bodies not to have a 40% quota of women on its board, a requirement set by the government. Only three of the New Zealand Rugby Union's nine board members are currently women. Comment from Raylene Castle, CEO of Sport New Zealand: “ Although it has made real progress towards compliance, with three women out of nine board members, New Zealand Rugby has made it clear that the earliest it can come into compliance with the 40% target is that female representation will likely be April 2023.The result: Rugby Union could be slapped with a new fine next year.
